KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — It apparently isn’t popular with all Kalamazoo Township residents but Trustees voted 4 to 2 last night to impose an outdoor burning ban, the kind that Portage, Kalamazoo and Parchment have had for years.
It ends the practice of burning trash, leaves and other yard wastes. Small campfires and barbeques will be allowed.
Supporters cited health concerns, the inherent dangers and public costs of outdoor burning.
Opponents wonder what they are going to do with all those leaves next fall. Trustee Steve Leuty says there are all sorts of options, from composting to the Township’s leaf pick-up program to mulching it back into the yard.
It may end the fall fragrances of burning leaves that some may think of fondly, but the neighbor with respiratory problems won’t mind a bit.
