UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) -The Dome is home in Union City following last Monday’s Memorial Day Parade and funds are being raised now to have the “Village Green” be its permanent home.
The Union City Society for Historic Preservation says the dome was on top of the Watkins-Mason Building at North Broadway and Hammond for 100 years until 2003 when it was removed and the building was torn down for a planned grocery store.
But the plans for the store fell through and the site eventually became the “Village Green” in front of the Family Dollar store.
The whereabouts of the Dome were not known until August 2015 when it was found west of Three Rivers.
The owner eventually agreed to donate it back to the village a year later.
A Dome Project committee was formed to return the dome to its original site. The Union City Village Council formally approved the “Village Green” for the Dome Project and an architect is now working on the design of an octagon gazebo for the Dome.
Over $14,000 has been raised so far thanks in part to the Union City Centennial Trust.
If you would like to donate, there are donation forms at the Society for Historic Preservation or you can mail donations to Society for Historic Preservation, 210 Charlotte St., Union City, MI 49094. Please specify “Dome Project” on your check.
