WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) — Michigan’s senior U.S. senator will serve as the co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force.
Senator Debbie Stabenow will chair the task force along with Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk as they look to coordinate efforts to protect the Great Lakes ecosystem from threats like sewage dumping and invasive Asian carp. The panel dates to the mid-1980s, and Senator Kirk has served as co-chair since 2011.
Stabenow has been outspoken in her efforts to get the Chicago River system separated from Lake Michigan to prevent Asian carp that are in Illinois from getting into the lake, but nothing substantial has been done to date.
