WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) — Apple growers in Michigan are likely to see a boost in exporting opportunities thanks to a new trade agreement with China.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the “Grand Rapids Press” that the deal opens China to all varieties of American-grown apples, but acknowledges it could also swing the other way with Chinese apples coming to this country. Before the new agreement was reached over the weekend, the only apples allowed from the U.S. into China were golden delicious and red delicious, and only from Washington state.
Michigan is the nation’s third largest apple growing state, trailing only Washington and New York.
