KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO) — Kalamazoo Township gave final approval for a special use permit that will allow structures that include both residential and commercial uses to exist in the same building.
If a shop owner wanted to live above their shop they could, if they building met certain specifications.
The living space would have to be on a different floor and there would have to be a separate entrance.
Supervisor Ron Reid says current zoning doesn’t allow it, eventhough it was how almost all businesses used to be operated, and many communities are once again encouraging the practice.
Trustees say this is the way communities are rebuilding neighborhoods and encouraging small business.
