PUNTA GORDA, FLA. (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University is busting a move, with plans to offer aviation and several other high profile academic programs in Florida.
Officials in the Sunshine State have approved two provisional licenses for Western to operate a Florida campus at the Punta Gorda Airport and in Riverview, where the WMU Cooley Law School already has classrooms.
They will be working in Affiliation with Florida Southwestern State College to launch pilot training and aviation technology programs.
Dean of the Aviation School Dave Powell said the demand for trained pilots and mechanics is exploding at a time when the military is producing fewer pilots.
Long-term plans could include offering programs in health services and engineering management in Florida.
The university still needs final approval from the Higher Learning Commission before executing the plan.
