PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — The Portage Public Safety Department is changing their policy on high-speed chases, following the lead of other police agencies that now only chase violent felons.
The decision was made following a chase involving a Kalamazoo teen that cost a Paw Paw woman her life earlier this year.
The teen was just afraid of getting a ticket.
The Kalamazoo Public Safety, Michigan State Police and other agencies already carefully weigh whether the chase is worth the risk before they engage, simply because statistically, about a third of the chases end with a crash.
