CENTREVILLE (WKZO-AM) — A Sturgis man has been charged with open murder for a stabbing at his Jacob Street home on Sunday.
St. Joseph County Prosecutors have charged 37-year-old Jonathan Fleming for the death of 39-year-old Christopher Calhoun.
Fleming blurted out at the end of his arraignment that it was self-defense. The judge warned him that he should not make statements at this hearing that might be held against him later.
He will get a chance to make that case at his preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for Oct. 18.
Authorities will only say the stabbing took place following an altercation between the two men, an altercation that also left Fleming injured and in need of treatment.
Prosecutors say Calhoun was stabbed multiple times. The judge set bond for Fleming at $500,000.
