KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Geological Survey at Western Michigan University picked up a $500,000 check from the state on Thursday that’ll be put toward what they’re calling an important mapping project.
The one-time appropriation will help the survey develop a program for mapping, identifying and protecting Michigan’s natural resources — something that director John Yellich says hasn’t really been done in over three decades.
“What the state has been lacking over a number of years is gathering data and making it readily available to the general public, so that they can get real answers as to where the aggregate resources are, where the water resources are, what the water quality is and what the water quantity is,” Yellich said.
Yellich said the survey will use the data to champion additional studies and programs the state should consider.
