PORTAGE (WKZO-AM/FM) — A Portage man, who may have mental health issues, has been ordered to undergo a competency exam after he allegedly attacked a cab driver out of the blue.
The 60-year-old cabbie had picked him up at a local hospital and delivered him to Albatross Court near the Milham Meadows Apartment Complex on Jan. 26.
Portage Public Safety said, despite being stabbed in the throat with a pocket knife and kicked in the face, the cabbie jumped the suspect to keep him from escaping.
Arturo Perez-DeLeon, 25, is being held without bond in the Kalamazoo County Jail charged with assault with intent to murder. He reportedly told police investigators that the cab driver had taken him to the wrong address, and fearing for his life, he tried to kill the older man.
