LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Rick Snyder has released the recommendations from his 21st Century Education Commission which is designed to be a blueprint for rebuilding the state’s School System.
Some of the far reaching and controversial proposals include doing away with grade levels, eliminating or replacing the State School Board, and offering free pre-school and community college tuition, and more funding for high risk low income populations.
Snyder, who was a graduate of Kellogg Community College in his hometown before going on to the U of M. says they need more counselors and better teachers in schools to make sure children are steered to the careers and colleges they are best suited for.
Some of the recommendations will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, others will require controversial legislation and doing away with the State Board of Education will take a Constitutional Amendment.
PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Calhoun County Deputies are blaming speed for a fatal accident that claimed the life of a young man who crashed into a UPS Truck early Friday afternoon. Sgt. Steve Hinkley says the collision occurred on Bellevue Road just after 1 pm when the delivery van slowed to turn into a driveway and the speeding SUV driven by the victim slammed into its rear end. The impact violently spun the larger UPS truck around. Despite that the UPS driver was not injured. The SUV driver, a 21 year old from Battle Creek was rushed to Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo where he later died from his injuries. They are investigating a gun found on the gurney used to transport him to the hospital. Toxicology tests will be conducted to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.
UNDATED (WKZO AM/FM) — We all have things to do this weekend because of the switch from daylight savings this weekend, and an hour less to do them, because we will all be springing forward this weekend.Authorities say this is the time when you want to check the batteries in your smoke detectors, and maybe your alarm clock. You may also want to make sure your carbon monoxide detector is operating. If you don’t have one, then maybe you should get one. This of course is in addition to moving all your clocks an hour forward before you go to bed tonight. That may be trickier these days because some of your digital clocks and appliances may reset themselves and others may not. Some appliances that didn’t used to have timers, do now, like microwaves ovens, dishwashers and refrigerators.
