KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The old joke is that Michigan really has just two seasons…winter and construction season and it looks like the later is over, at least in the city of Kalamazoo.
Utilities director James Baker says there will still be watermain breaks occasionally disrupting traffic, but now that the new Traffic Circle is open on Gull Street and planned maintenance on the Patterson Street Bridge has been put off, a very busy construction season is over.
He says new funds from the Foundation for Excellence funded a number of projects, including sidewalk repairs, and replacing lead water lines, trimming trees and putting in gutters.
He says his department also received additional money for local roads this year, and completed two projects that were left over from last year.
That combined with work by MDOT on West Main, improvements on Portage Street and the reconstruction of rail crossings by Amtrak and other projects, summer has been another challenge for commuters.
