FAWN RIVER TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Two small children from Coldwater were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo Sunday after they were overcome by exhaust fumes while sitting in a car.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department says the parents had brought the youngsters to the Sweet Lake Trailer Park on U.S. 12 in Fawn River Township to look at a trailer.
They had left the children in the car while they talked to the trailer park manager.
Deputies say the parents left the car running but it had an exhaust leak. The exhaust from the engine got into the passenger compartment and the youngsters were overcome by the fumes.
The person who made the call to the Sheriff’s Department just before 12 noon said the children had stopped breathing and CPR was being done on one of them.
The children were treated by Life Care Ambulance and medics from the Tri Township Fire Department before they were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital.
A Sheriff’s Department report has been sent to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible criminals charges being filed against the parents. No names are being released at this time.
