UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak says the Board of Canvassers finished their work certifying the 2018 General Election on Monday. After double checking the ballots in the tight race for Union City Village President, it was determined that William Avery was the winner by a total of six votes over James P. Hurley instead of four as originally thought.
The final total was Avery 204, Hurley 198, Devin Bloom with 113 and Randy Timperley with 25 votes. Avery carried Union Township 198-196 over Hurley after Hurley lost a couple of votes during the count by the Board of Canvassers.
Avery also carried the small precinct in Calhoun County’s Burlington Township over Hurley 6-2 to give him the six vote victory.
Hurley has until next Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. to ask for a recount. There was a delay in counting the Union Township ballots on Election Night because the poll workers were having problems balancing the tabulator with the voter list.
