COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A state prison inmate from Detroit will spend more time behind bars following an attack on three Lakeland Correctional Facility officers last March.
34-year-old Jonathan Roundtree was given a two to five year sentence on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court after entering a guilty plea to a charge being a prisoner in possession of a weapon. Three counts of assaulting a prison employee were dismissed in exchange for the plea as part of a plea bargain agreement with the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office.
The sentence will run consecutive to the current time he is serving in the Marquette Branch Prison.
Roundtree was accused of having a shank in his possession when the confrontation took place.
At the time of the incident, Roundtree was serving time for being one of three suspects trying to smuggle contraband, cellphones and weapons to prisoners at the Ionia Prison in August 2017.
His criminal record goes back to 2002. It includes crimes for car jacking, receiving and concealing stolen property and altering pistols.
