STURGIS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Hundreds of concerned Sturgis residents turned out for questions and answers from officials and administrators at Sturgis Hospital Monday night, following plans to close oncology, hospice, and birthing centers and layoff 60 staff members.
CEO Robert LaBarge says acute financial constraints and declining patient visits have forced the cuts.
While he has been criticized for his lack of transparency in the decision making process, he says his biggest regret is actually not making the move sooner.
He says the board sought a buyer for the facility and received no offers.
He says this is the best way to keep the organization functioning for the long haul.
