EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Former Michigan State University athletic director Merritt Norvell Jr. has passed away.
Norvell became the Spartans first Black director of athletics in July of 1995 and served in the position through the spring of 1999. During his tenure, the MSU volleyball, hockey and men’s basketball teams each reached the NCAA Final Four and the football team appeared in three bowl games.
Current director of athletics Bill Beekman said Norvell’s impact was felt across college athletics.
