KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says after a thorough investigation, they’ve determined a county jail inmate found dead last December 17 committed suicide.
According to a release from the sheriff Friday, a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department deputy making her regular rounds that day discovered an unresponsive inmate in a cell in the medical/mental health wing of the Kalamazoo County Jail. The deputy immediately called for help and initiated life-saving measures to revive the individual, to no avail.
29 year-old Chase David Dalton Lovell of Galesburg had been arraigned in Kalamazoo County District Court December 16 on a charge of first-degree arson for a fire in the psychiatric unit of Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Lovell’s mother told MLive in late December that her son had been in and out of the hospital four times earlier in the year due to mental health issues, something many people had no idea he had been struggling with, she said.
