SOUTH HAVEN (WHTC-AM/FM) — In the course of 12 hours on Tuesday, South Haven Area Emergency Services firefighters were called to two major fires.
Two people were seriously hurt when a house exploded in Van Buren County’s South Haven Township.
South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) firefighters were called to a home at 70903 Second Avenue at 5:57 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2021.
A state police trooper, nearly two miles away on I-196, reported hearing the sound of the blast from which destroyed the one-story, ranch-style house.
Neighbors helped rescue a man and woman in the home. The victims were rushed to emergency rooms; one went by Covert Township ambulance to Bronson-South Hospital, the other by helicopter to a South Bend hospital.
Firefighters from SHAES, Bangor, Columbia, and Ganges townships put out the fire. South Haven Police Department and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
The explosion and fire will be investigated by Michigan’s Fire Marshal, according to SHAES authorities.
This was the second major fire in South Haven in less than 24 hours. Earlier Tuesday, SHAES firefighters doused a fire at Adventure Water Sports on Dunkley Avenue in the City of South Haven.
