GOBLES, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Christmas in July is coming to a close, but trees for the actual holiday in December may be harder to find this year. Demand for real Christmas trees grows every year but this year’s severe drought in the Northwest is likely to affect availability.
Step in Michigan growers like Dan Wahmhoff in Gobles whose 150 acre choose and cut operation is no longer short on water. The Wahmhoff family also has a wholesale Christmas tree operation covering about two-thirds of the country. And the popular Fraser firs he’s growing in July are likely to become household centerpieces post-Thanksgiving.
Over 26 million live holiday trees were produced in the U.S. last year. This year a bigger percentage is likely to be grown on farms here in Michigan.
