MARSHALL, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Following an investigation by the Marshall Police Department, it was determined that a report of a threat made by a 13-year-old boy against Marshall Middle School was not credible.
The youngster is a former Marshall student.
Marshall Police Chief Josh Lankerd says officers spoke with Marshall Public School staff who provided a screen shot of a social media message shared between two 14-year-old students, which stated that the 13-year-old suspect “has been saying he gonna shoot up the school”.
Officers interviewed both 14-year-olds and found there was no direct threat made by the 13-year-old.
The 13-year-old male was located at his home in Adrian. The Adrian Police Department assisted Marshall Police in the completion of a threat assessment.
The residence was searched and no firearms were found.
During the course of the investigation, Lankerd says a video, unrelated to the threat, was discovered showing the 13-year-old holding what appeared to be a handgun.
Police investigated the video and determined the handgun was a BB pistol that belonged to a friend.
Marshall schools were shut down on Thursday after school officials got information about the reported threat.
Superintendent Becky Jones said in a letter that while police found the threat was not credible, the district will take threats such as this one very seriously.
