PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A hang-out spot for generations of Portage teens and their parents is about to fade into history.
The City Council has agreed to buy the former West Lake Drive-in.
The prime piece of lakefront property is located on the narrow strip of land that separates West and Austin Lakes. The drive-in, with its magnificent view of the water, opened in the early 1960’s and remained open until this February, when higher costs no longer made it viable.
The owner had hoped to redevelop it but his plans did not bear fruit. The City plans to demolish the old drive-in and turn it into green space, until a better use comes along.
Deputy City Manager Micheal Carroll says it will give the city owned property across the street a clear view of West Lake.
The city of buying the parcel, which is 200 feet long and about 50 feet deep for $376,000.
