KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Galesburg man charged with two counts of open murder for killing two of his neighbors in an apartment complex has plead not guilty by reason of insanity.
Kalamazoo County Circuit Court Judge Paul Bridenstine reportedly accepted the plea from William Wolfe Thursday in the shooting death of Virgil and Kailey Walker in June 2021.
According to court records, Wolfe told investigators he shot and killed his neighbors because they were too loud, and he couldn’t sleep. He apparently will be going to a state psychiatric hospital instead of prison.
Wolfe’s insanity plea was accepted after the findings of his court-ordered evaluation were reviewed Thursday. The evaluation said Wolfe suffers from insanity and didn’t understand his actions.
Wolfe will undergo a 60-day observation period at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry before a review hearing scheduled for September 8.
At that hearing, a judge will evaluate findings from state psychiatrists and determine the length and nature of Wolfe’s treatment.
