MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Authorities have confirmed that recovery crews have found the body of an Ohio man in Lake Michigan in Muskegon County.
Police have identified the victim as 19-year-old Michael Hooffstetter who was recovered around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 25, according to the Muskegon Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to Pier Marquette Beach near the South Break arm around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, July 24, after hearing of a swimmer in distress.
Authorities say Hooffstetter was swimming at the beach with friends when he was overcome by the waves and the current. Other beachgoeres tried to rescue the swimmer but were unsuccessful.
Rescue efforts had to be put on hold several hours on Sunday night due to deteriorating conditions.
The Muskegon Police Department was assisted by the Muskegon Fire Department, Norton Shores Fire Department, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department, The Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
