ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A vigil was held for 22-year-old Joseph Nagle who was shot and killed by an Allegan County deputy during a June 16 traffic stop.
Supporters gathered outside the Allegan County Jail Sunday night, July 24, to also demand justice for Nagle whom the Allegan Count Police department said was stopped for suspicion of impaired driving.
Kent County Commissioner Robert Womack attended the vigil to lend his support to family and friends who came asking for transparency in the ongoing investigation of Nagle’s death.
On June 23, Detectives with the Michigan State Police Fifth District Special Investigations Sections released a report on an investigation conducted stating that during the traffic stop, Nagle had displayed indicators of impairment during sobriety tests.
When the Allegan County deputy advised him that he was under arrest, Nagle immediately began fighting with the deputy. The deputy then fired a single gunshot during the altercation which hit Nagle in the chest area.
The report also stated that the patrol vehicle was not equipped with a dashcam, and that the deputy was not wearing a bodycam.
A private funeral for Nagle was held on Saturday, July 23.
