KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – In the wake of the Michigan State University shootings that killed three and wounded five last week, City of Kalamazoo Vice Mayor Don Cooney is calling on the State Legislature to act to curb gun violence.
Michigan Democrats introduced 11 bills in the Senate and 14 in the State House last week.
The proposed bills would enact “red flag” policies, require safe gun storage, and improve mental health programs to prevent future mass shootings.
Cooney, who is an associate professor in the School of Social Work at Western Michigan University, says even those laws may not get at the root causes.
Cooney’s comments came just hours after MSU students flooded the Capitol lawn in Lansing to demand immediate action.
Kalamazoo City Commissioners Monday night accepted a $97,000 grant from the United States Department of Justice for equipment that will improve communications between Public Safety Officers, Township Police and school officials during critical incidents, like the one at MSU last week.
