DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees met in Detroit Thursday and agreed to loan money to the WMU College of Aviation to update their fleet of airplanes.
Students are currently flying the Cirrus SR-20. They want to replace the 28 plane fleet with planes that are even more advanced. That plane is yet to be determined.
The school also want to purchase a Super Decathlon training aircraft, which will offer more opportunities for students to develop specialized skills.
The Board of Trustees agreed to lend the College of Aviation up to $20 million from the WMU Foundation, which will be combined with the money made selling their current fleet, allowing the purchase of 32 new airplanes.
The Battle Creek-based College of Aviation is one of the highest ranked in the nation and the only school of its kind in Michigan.
