PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two Portage firefighters received minor injuries while battling a house fire Monday afternoon, June 3.
According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, it happened around 3:30 p.m. when crews responded to the 10000 block of South Westnedge Avenue for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a well involved fire they believe started in or near the garage and spread into the residence.
Multiple fire departments brought the fire under control in about 45 minutes but stayed on scene for several hours to make sure it was fully extinguished.
Two firefighters were then sent to the hospital where they were treated and released with minor injuries.
Authorities reported no other injuries and say the house itself is a total loss with damage estimated to be more than $200,000 dollars. Portage fire investigators are working to determine a cause for the fire which they say is not considered suspicious.
