KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After a decade of planning, a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln sculpted by Terre Haute IN artist Bill Wolfe will be dedicated and unveiled this Sunday in Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park, 167 years to the day and hour that Lincoln spoke at the downtown city park in 1856.
The 2:00 p.m. ceremony will be hosted by the Kalamazoo Abraham Lincoln Institute and will feature speakers Dr. Michael Rice, State Superintendent of Public Education, Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson, and State Commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil (SUVCW), Gary Swain.
Soloist and former Kalamazoo resident Alfrelynn Roberts will sing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” acapella, and the vintage Dodworth Saxhorn Band will provide period music.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College student Aija Hodges will recite a poem written for the occasion by Institute president Cameron S. Brown.
Those planning to attend the ceremony Sunday are advised to bring folding chairs.
The event is open to the public.
