KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo city commission will hold the public hearing for their 2024 budget this evening.
The proposed spending plan hasn’t stirred much controversy, but there has been some push back from the community on a proposal for another sizable increase in water and sewer rates.
City chief operations officer Steve Ascenzi says one thing that makes Kalamazoo’s budget different from other cities is the Foundation for Excellence.
It not only funds projects other cities don’t have the cash for, but reduces the tax rate.
The city has just mailed out its newsletter, explaining exactly what the Foundation pays for, and how it works.
Foundation for Excellence director Steve Brown had this to say.
He says by the end of 2024, the FFE will have funded just under $200-million in programs the city would not have gotten otherwise.
