KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Investigators have new clues and a big piece of evidence in Kalamazoo’s first homicide of 2024. They say they have found the car involved in the shooting.
26-year-old Romeo Weakley was fatally wounded just an hour and a half into the new year, on South near John Street, downtown. A second person was wounded.
Kalamazoo set a new record for homicides in 2023. Last night Kalamazoo city commissioners expressed their hope that it isn’t repeated this year, despite the discouraging start.
Mayor Dave Anderson says it’s up to everyone to help, and that may mean stepping in when it looks like things might turn violent.
He says the city is doing what they can, but that’s limited.
Commissioner Chris Preadel says they will continue to do what they can.
Public Safety was looking for a dark colored Dodge Charger four door that might have bullet holes. They are offering no other details.
The discovery of the vehicle could provide more clues to identify a suspect, but so far there have been no arrests.
