When we take a look back in life, it seems to sometimes come to us in flashbacks, like polaroid. That is exactly what happened when I had the honor of interviewing Girl Scout Sydney.
I flashed back to wearing a green uniform, with white knee socks and being filled with anticipation for the upcoming Girl Scout meeting after school…
It was back in 1980 something I was a Girl Scout, and my mom was the leader. Being in the troop was all fun, and the best part is we didn’t even know that we were learning something along the way.
When people think of the Girl Scouts, they think of cookies!!!! Oh, those sweet, sweet cookies, from thin mints to tagalongs, whatever your poison they all are delectable! Yet, there is so much more to being a Girl Scout than selling cookies! Even though slinging the cookies that is great, it has a lesson attached to it. The lessoned confidence. Confidence to be assertive and express your thoughts. That is a lesson that will benefit everyone in life, for multiple reasons (you know).
Looking back, I remember camping trips, cleaning up shore lines, learning how to sew, snow climbing, and how to be a good friend…Everything I really needed to know to be a good functioning human I learned from the Scouts.
I think the Girl Scout creed sums it up!
Girl Scout Law
“I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.”
In the journey of life, if you think about it the ‘Girl Scout Law’ rings true. In any situation a lady can draw on the ideology that the Scouts believe in and stay true to one’s self.
Remember when you are buying cookies, the Girl Scouts are so much more than yummy cookie. It is becoming the best you can be, surrounded by woman who support and believe in you.
Today follow the Girls Scout lead and “Leave a little Sparkle Wherever You Go!”
Oh, and enjoy the cookies!
