COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Bethel Township man was arraigned Friday on four charges following a Michigan State Police investigation into an incident last week in which Troopers say the man wanted police to shoot him, and then he set his residence on fire.
Bond for 26-year-old Caleb Campbell is $50,000 as he is facing two charges of Resisting and Obstructing. He has also been charged with arson and assault.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for January 17th with a preliminary exam set for January 24th.
State Police said in a press release they issued last week that Campbell allegedly made statements to Branch County Central Dispatch about using the police to commit suicide during the December 28, 2016 incident.
Troopers said after Campbell allegedly set his trailer on fire in the 500 block of Block Road, he refused orders to remove his hand from his pocket. He then resisted efforts to be handcuffed by State Police and Branch County Sheriff’s deputies.
Campbell was taken into custody after a brief struggle which resulted in a trooper suffering a minor injury. Troopers say Campbell admitted to them that he planned to have them shoot him by pointing a fake gun.
