VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — The suspect who allegedly turned a routine traffic stop into a high speed chase that spanned two counties and resulted in felony arrests have now been arraigned on multiple charges.
A Van Buren County Deputy tried to stop the car, because of an obscured license plate in Bloomingdale early Tuesday morning and the driver refused to comply, heading east toward Kalamazoo County where deputies were waiting with stop sticks, blowing out the front tires on the suspect vehicle.
Deputies had to deploy a Taser to take the driver into custody, after he refused to come out of the car, and they had to bust out the window to get him.
They learned that 39-year-old Shawn Newnum was wanted on warrants out of Kalamazoo County and the car had been stolen.
He was also charged with resisting arrest and fleeing and eluding. His passenger, 35-year-old Kristine Marie Jung was arrested for possession of meth. Newnum is being held on $150,000 bond. Bond for Jung was set at $15,000.
