LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan House Transportation Committee has approved a bill that has already cleared the State Senate on Tuesday that would rename the stretch of I-94 that passes through Comstock after fallen Fire Chief Ed Switalski.
Senator Margaret O’Brien of Portage, who sponsored the original bill, testified that “Renaming this stretch of I-94 after him will help to remind people of road safety and honor his commitment to our community.”
Switalski was killed in June of last year when he was struck by a driver who had been speeding and using his cell phone just before losing control.
Switalski was responding to a report of an accident along the interstate. The bill would name the span between exits 80 and 86 on I-94 the Ed Switalski Memorial Highway.
“My hope is that if just one person sees the sign honoring Chief Switalski and realizes it’s there as a memorial they will slow down and pay attention to the road,” said Rep. Dave Maturen, R-Vicksburg, who has introduced the House version of the bill. “Maybe it will save a life — maybe even their own.”The bill now heads to the House Floor..
