KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: The City of Kalamazoo has announced that it will add some of the old candy canes to its Candy Cane Lane display in Bronson Park.
Previously, the City had revealed a new display that featured candy canes standing straight up, rather than tilted forward at an angle to create an enclosed passageway feel.
Officials attributed the change to the fact that the older candy canes were in poor condition, among other reasons.
After backlash on social media in response to the new display, the City has announced that it will reinstate some of the older candy canes.
“We will be holding on to some of the previous candy canes and displaying them in Bronson Park so that photos can continue to be taken with them for years to come,” officials said in a release.
The City is also planning on adding garland and other decorations to the new candy canes to retain the feel of an enclosed walkway.

The City of Kalamazoo has come under criticism from citizens about its new Candy Cane Lane display in Bronson Park.
Previously, the candy canes leaned forward into each other to create an enclosed walkway. The new display features candy canes that stand straight up.
Upon releasing a photo gallery in a Facebook post, negative comments toward the new display were made by citizens.
The City of Kalamazoo issued a statement citing old age of the previous candy canes as a reason for the change, among other factors such as structural issues. It was also said that the display did not meet the guidelines of the American Disabilities Act.
The City says it is looking for a way to use some of the old candy canes, while the others will be auctioned off.
The news comes as the city prepares for its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony this Friday.
