KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Heads up for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers traveling through the city of Kalamazoo: the new shared street ordinance goes into effect Saturday June 1st.
This means that drivers must stop for pedestrians that are waiting or entering both marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Citizens on foot must also be responsible for obeying the traffic laws by stopping before entering a crosswalk, follow pedestrian signals, and yield to vehicles outside of crosswalks.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller says everyone must keep in mind that this is only a city rule and pedestrians could still be ticketed for darting across the street in other parts of the county.
Bikers can also ride on sidewalks with this new city ordinance, unless a sign says otherwise.
It’s all in an effort to make pedestrian crosswalks safer in the city of Kalamazoo.
More information on this ordinance can be found on the city’s website.
