COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 58-year-old man had to be rescued late Sunday afternoon after a trench collapsed on the west side of Coldwater.
Coldwater Fire Marshall Steve Trall says the Fire Department was dispatched to 565 West Chicago just east of Northside Drive at 4:24 p.m..
They found the man buried to his waist from a cave-in to the trench he was working in.
Off duty firefighters also responded to assist with the rescue.
The unidentified man was removed from the trench at about 6:30 p.m. and taken by Lifecare Ambulance to Promedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
Coldwater firefighters were assisted by the Coldwater Police Department, Lifecare Ambulance, Michigan State Police, the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities and Michigan Gas.
Crews cleared the scene just after 7:15 p.m. on Sunday night.
Coldwater fire officials say they were lucky enough to be trained and well equipped for trench rescue. The fire department houses one of four MI-TRT-5 equipment trailers with thousands of dollars worth of technical rescue equipment on it.
