KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo County Judge temporarily halted Comstock Public School’s mask mandate on Thursday, February 24.
This comes as a group of parents filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, February 23, arguing that the district didn’t have the authority to continue it’s mask requirement after state and county health authorities dropped their recommendation of masking up in schools.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services changed it’s recommendation last week, saying that districts should work with local health departments to develop their own policy.
Kalamazoo County followed suit by dropping it’s recommendation of masking in classrooms, with Comstock remaining as one of two school districts in the county with a mandate in place. Kalamazoo Public School officials say they plan to keep it’s universal mask requirement in place for the remainder of the school year.
A Kalamazoo County Circuit Court judge granted a temporary injunction on the mandate as the lawsuit plays out in court. A hearing is scheduled in the case for Thursday, March 10.
Portage Public Schools and Mattawan Consolidated School Distric dropped their mask mandates following the new guidance from the Health Department.
