LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Representative Christine Morse of Texas Township on Thursday, May 26, introduced House Resolution 306, urging Congress to fund scientific research on gun violence and it’s effects on public health.
Along with funding research, the resolution would require the U.S. Surgeon General to issue annual reports the public on the current state of gun violence in the country. The legislation already garnering strong support from over 25 co-sponsors so far.
Morse released the following statement after introducing House Resolution 306:
“It is long, long past time that we take action to end gun violence in our country. An average of 100 people per day die from gun violence in the United States. This is far beyond being a problem — gun violence is a plague that is literally and metaphorically killing our families, our communities, our state and our country. This is not about ‘taking away guns’ or any other political fear-mongering. It’s about making our country safe for everyone. In the shadow of yet another tragic mass school shooting, violence caused by firearms needs to be at the forefront of our legislative agendas. Period. We must call for action on gun violence. We must stop talking and start making real changes to protect our citizens.”
Mores also hosted a school safety town hall in Portage Thursday evening, May 26. There, she briefed attendees on the latest updates on gun violence prevention legislation, and spoke with school administrators and educators about the steps they have taken to improve safety in schools. Morse also sought input on how the Legislature can aid in those efforts.
