KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The community effort to prevent gun violence in Kalamazoo is moving forward slowly, but officials say they are making progress.
Jen Heymoss, who coordinates the Gun Violence Prevention Network for the Kalamazoo Foundation told the Kalamazoo City Commission Monday they have been gathering input for a long term strategy for the last few months, a process that continues.
Their preliminary goals are to intervene somehow to prevent violence and do more to help the traumatized victims, among other things. That includes supporting youth and families, increasing incomes, create a safer community, and better overall coordination.
Heymoss says that is a tall order that will take time, and while almost everyone has an opinion on how to prevent shootings, they are all different.
If all goes as planned they should have a long term strategy next April.
