KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A controversial proposal to redesign the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County will be back before the County Board this Wednesday afternoon, and its fate could be decided.
Commissioner Jen Strebs feels that current appointed Road Commissioners are unresponsive to the public and should either be elected, or the department folded back into the County Government. And she would like to see a study done to see if it will save money.
But there has been strong opposition from other Commissioners, who essentially say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Township Supervisors have also taken a strong stand against making any changes, because it is their roads the Road Commission looks after, as the Cities of Kalamazoo and Portage maintain their own roads.
A vote on a proposal to hire a consultant to analyze their options could come up for a vote this afternoon.
