COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The two suspects from Detroit who were arrested over the weekend for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs and smart phones into the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater were formally arraigned in Branch County District Court on Monday.
28-year-old Adoreray Samone Bruce and 59-year-old Edison William Terry are each facing five charges. Branch County Prosecutors have charged both of them with delivery of controlled substances, conspiracy to commit delivery of a controlled substance, possession of meth, attempted bringing contraband into a prison and attempted bringing cellphones into a prison.
Terry is also facing a fourth offense habitual offender sentencing enhancer. He has previous convictions for larceny, breaking and entering, receiving and concealing stolen property and malicious destruction of property. They were arrested by the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections on Sunday morning following a month long investigation into incidents involving drugs and cell phones being smuggled into the Lakeland Correctional Facility.
Investigators received some advance notice that another attempt may occur in the near future. At about 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning, State Police say a vehicle containing two people stopped on Marshall Road along the western side of the prison facility. According to Branch County Court documents, Terry got out of the car and was quickly apprehended. Bruce sped away but was stopped by police at Marshall and Newton Roads.
Court documents state the packages recovered by police contained two smart phones, about 96 grams of marijuana wax, 10 grams of suspected powder heroin and about 30 grams of suspect methamphetamine. The vehicle used was a 2013 Chrysler 200 registered to a third party. The matter is still under investigation.
Terry’s bond was set at $50,000 while the bond for Bruce was set at $15,000. Not guilty pleas were entered for both suspects. Probable cause hearings were scheduled for August 24 with preliminary exams on August 29.
