UNDATED (WKZO-AM) — Firearm deer season starts Tuesday in Michigan.
That means that gun shops and hunting stores were busy all weekend and so were serious hunters who may have been out scouting locations, preparing their equipment, installing tree stands and making other preparations.
It’s a major industry in some parts of the state. Bronson Zigmont was among those at a Gander Mountain store in west Michigan Sunday getting ready. He tells 24-7 News that “friends, relatives, the old and the young are all taking the next two weeks off to go hunting.”
He says for safety sake, always wear hunters orange, and always point firearms away from people and roads.
The hunt will run through November 30, and by then the DNR estimates that 750,000 hunters will have headed out into the woods. They will spend about $2.3 billion dollars on everything from licenses, to guns and ammo, outfits, beer, lodging and having their deer processed, if they are successful out in the woods.
Hunters that do harvest a deer should be sure to stop by a Department of Natural Resources check station to have the animal examined. Opening day falls on a Tuesday this year and that means there may be a lot of absenteeism from schools and work by avid hunters who hold opening day as precious and sacred.
The legislature has scheduled no sessions for their combined deer hunt and Thanksgiving break. In Northern Michigan, we hear some businesses and school districts close. It’s just easier that way.
