Here in Southwest Michigan, there’s no escaping the snow miser’s wrath.
I ran into my first car trouble of the year on Monday morning thanks to the freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. I got to my Jeep, loaded in, and when I went to close the driver’s door, it wouldn’t shut.
Of course, I tried slamming it a few times (I bet a few good slams released some frustration in that moment!). Then I realized I had to get serious!
I could call one of the guys at work. I could call my mechanic, Mr. Muffler. Or, I could try to figure it out myself, and that’s exactly what I did.
I examined the lock, got a little greasy, and fiddled my way to fixing it! I couldn’t have been prouder of myself, but in reality, I am pretty unprepared for roadside problems.
Ironically, just an hour after fixing my door, I read a story that pointed out I’d be in trouble if I broke down on the road! Check this out!
Ready.gov put together a list of everything we need in our vehicles to stay safe if stranded in a snowstorm or breakdown.
- Jumper cables
- Flares or reflective triangles
- Ice scraper
- Phone charger
- Flashlight
- Water and snacks
- Heated blanket (one that plugs into your 12-volt charger)
- Body and hand warmers (like Hot Hands)
- Tow straps
- Traction mats for your tires (Weather.gov also says you can carry a bag of sand or kitty litter in your trunk for better traction)
I only have 4 of the 10 recommended items, and of course, one of them is snacks.
Looks like I need a trip to the auto parts store… maybe there will be a cute salesperson there.
Mostly, though, I’d just like to live through the winter months. Take your time and be safe!
