PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council has given a woman with a criminal history permission to do door-to-door sales, despite the fact that the chief of police rejected her permit.
Rishelle Hartman, who works for Weed Man Lawncare, appealed to the Portage City Council to have the decision reversed, and the council voted 4-to-1 to grant her appeal.
She says she has turned her life around and deserves a second chance.
Chris Burns made the motion.
The council also expressed the consensus that they shouldn’t be put in a position to have to make such decisions, even though city ordinance requires it.
Council Members Jihan Young and Nichole Miller had this to say.
They asked City Manager Pat McGinnis to come back with an ordinance amendment that leaves them out of the process.
