LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder signed the active shooter alert bill a month ago, but went through the motions again Tuesday, holding a ceremony this time so local officials could attend.
The bill was co-sponsored by Rep. Brandt Iden, R-Oshtemo, and Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, and essentially creates a system similar to the Amber Alert, making it possible to notify the media and cellular phone users that an active shooter or terrorist may be in their community.
Iden said it was the result of discussions following the February mass-shooting in Kalamazoo and the fact that there was no way to warn the public about the threat.
Michigan State Police are still working on the implementation of the service.
