KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A proposal by Kalamazoo city staff to spend $220,000 to replace an in-house computer data storage system with cloud service from Oracle, was pulled off last night’s city commission agenda.
Oracle is a major player in building controversial data centers, and has been making a lot of other headlines lately.
The item was yanked from the same agenda that included a final vote on a moratorium on new data centers in the city.
Vice Mayor Drew Duncan, who asked to have it pulled off the agenda, claims he has issues with the provider.
“I didn’t want to sensationalize this, so we tried to do it, you know pretty discretely to be honest,” said Duncan.
In a memo proposing the change, staff says going on the cloud will provide more flexibility, greater security and reduce costs.
City Manager Malcolm Hankins says they need to make the improvement and will present their recommendation at the commissions’ next meeting in two weeks.
