KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The annual football game tonight between Kalamazoo Central High School and Loy Norrix High School will be held at Kalamazoo Central’s football complex with beefed up security.
It’s a direct response to a Kalamazoo Central High School student getting into the building with a gun on Friday.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says there will be some special rules for students who want to attend, and students from outside the district won’t be allowed in.
“If you are not a Kalamazoo high school student with an ID you cannot attend the game,” says Slade. He added “If you are a middle school student and you don’t have a parent with you, you cannot attend the game.”
There have been reoccurring problems at some of these cross-town rivalry games, as recently as this past January at a basketball game between the two schools.
KPS officials have been electronic screening for weapons at sports events for years, and will again tonight.
