CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The man who is allegedly responsible for triggering an Amber Alert early yesterday is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail and is expected to be formally charged Friday.
Police say 37-year-old Fernando Cruz violated a personal protection order when he entered the home in Sturgis on Wednesday night where the mother of his three children were staying.
He then allegedly struck her and then took the children who are between two and five years old. Cruz reportedly drove the kids to Indiana.
Police phoned him and convinced Cruz to bring the children back to Sturgis unharmed.
Cruz is being held for domestic assault and child endangerment.
Police say he turned himself in to authorities at around 9:00 a.m. Thursday at his home in Sturgis without resistance, almost 11 hours after the whole episode began.
Sturgis Police also said no weapons were found when Cruz surrendered. The AMBER Alert issued by the Michigan State Police said he was considered to be armed and dangerous.
